Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zojirushi CD-JSC22 Superior Micom Electric Dispensing Pot 2.2 LitersCustomer Review: Indispensable tool for tea lovers Summary: 5 StarsThis is an indispensable tool for tea drinkers. After I melted my tea kettle by putting it to boil then going upstairs for hours, I started to search for a replacement. At first I looked at electric kettles, but the reviews for all of them mention one drawback or another that I would not want to deal with (persistent off odor and taste, cheap plastic or breakable parts, and hot exteriors being the biggest complaints people had).
When I found this little gem, I knew I had a winner. The features I love about it are:
* Constant supply of hot water 24/7. This little baby has been on constantly since I purchased it.
* The ability to choose different temperatures for different tea types. This model offers 140 degrees, 195 degrees, and 208 degrees; the only temperature missing is 175 degrees. Some tea purists like to brew different teas at different remperatures. I haven't tried that yet, but now that I have the option, I plan to try the different temperatures one of these days.
* A dispensing feature with a lock on it. I need to press an unlock button to be able to dispense the hot water. I appreciate this extra little safety feature. The lid also has a two-stage latch for safety.
* An attractive appearance. I love the smooth white exterior with the delicately colored flowers.
* An extremely easy time filling the pot. The entire (large) lid swings back and out of the way, making it very easy to fill it. The max fill line is clearly marked inside in very large letters so you can't possibly overfill it. There is also a fill level indicator on the outside so you don't have to open it to check the water level.
Other features people may appreciate:
* A timer (to set a time at which you want the pot to start heating the water--6 hours from now, 7 hours from now, and so on up to 10 hours from now)
* An automatic keep-warm feature (it keeps the water at the temperature you set it to)
* A reboil button
* A large carrying handle
* A dechlorinate feature (I used filtered water, so I don't use this)
* A steam-blocking feature
* An automatic shut-off when the pot gets too empty or when other unsafe conditions apply
* A removable lid for ease of emptying the pot
* A cleaning/descaling cycle
* A removable, cleanable filter
The manual recommends filling it full for the first time, bringing the water to full temperature, and dispensing all the water before actually using it. It also mentions the possibility of an off odor. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and taste, and yes, there was a very tiny bit of odor in the first batch of water (which I discarded as directed), but nothing that worried me (unlike odors from other appliances I've had), and no odor since then.
The only drawback, and this is very minor, is that you must plug it in to turn it on, and you must unplug it to turn it off. An on/off switch would be a nice addition. However, I leave it on all the time anyway.
I would also have liked to have 175 degrees as a temperature option, which at least one of Zojirushi's larger models has. However, I didn't think I needed to have over 4 liters (about 1 gallon) of hot water available at a time, so I chose this model, which has a 2.2 liter capacity (about half a gallon). The size is nice and compact and it fits in with all my other white appliances.
If you are looking for an electric kettle and you are a serious tea drinker, consider getting this item instead. Of course, it can be used to brew things other than tea--for instance, if you are an instant noodle fan, you could dispense enough hot water to make many cups before you run out of hot water.
This item would make a fabulous gift for anyone who loves tea or boils water a lot for cooking or beverages. I already have several people in mind for giving one to.
